North Myrtle Beach vs. Myrtle Beach: Where to Buy
Resort energy versus a residential beach town. Lane Sherman compares North Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach the way a relocator actually lives the week. Written by Lane Sherman of Sherman Beach Group at eXp Realty, a Myrtle Beach realtor on the Grand Strand.

Buyers who say they want “Myrtle Beach” often mean two different weeks. One is the central coast: towers, dining density, Market Common, and a name the rest of the country already knows. The other is North Myrtle Beach: four historic shoreline communities, golf carts on Ocean Drive, and a quieter oceanfront than the boardwalk corridor.
Lane Sherman tours both on purpose. This is the comparison we give relocators and second-home buyers before they fall in love with the first balcony. Start with North Myrtle Beach homes and Myrtle Beach condos, or step back to the Grand Strand hub.
The short version
Choose North Myrtle Beach if you want a beach town more than a resort strip. Family beaches, a stronger year-round cadence, and Cherry Grove if the pier and inlet are why you came.
Choose Myrtle Beach if you want high-rise amenities, a deeper condo inventory, Market Common, Grande Dunes, and the dining-and-show density people expect when they say the city’s name.
Neither is “better.” They solve different Saturdays.
How the water feels
Both have sand. The feel is not the same.
North Myrtle’s oceanfront is generally lower-slung. You get more cottages, more second-row houses, and condos that behave like a residential stack. Cherry Grove adds an inlet and a fishing pier. Windy Hill and Crescent run quieter than Ocean Drive’s Main Street.
Central Myrtle Beach is where the skyline is. Oceanfront towers, Kingston, the Breakers, and a guest mix that can feel like hospitality from Memorial Day to Labor Day. If you want that energy, or you want to rent into it, the inventory is deeper. See oceanfront homes.
Second row versus the 20th floor
A second-row house in North Myrtle with a pool is a different life than a two-bedroom in a central tower. One has a driveway and a grill. The other has an elevator and a view that does not quit. We make buyers say which week they want before we schedule both.
Year-round living
Plenty of people live in both cities in January. The texture differs.
North Myrtle still feels like a town in the off-season: grocery, a real winter community, golf-cart culture that is not only a slogan. That is why so many Pennsylvania and New Jersey relocators land there. Read the relocating guide if that is the move.
Myrtle Beach in January is quieter than July, but the machine is still a destination city. Market Common is the walkable exception many full-time buyers love. West of Kings Highway you find more conventional houses. Carolina Forest is the inland answer if you want a yard and a 20-minute beach drive.
Condos: two inventories
Myrtle Beach condos are the deeper oceanfront and mid-rise set. HOA dues and master policies can be heavier. Rental programs are more common in the towers.
North Myrtle Beach condos include oceanfront along the four beaches plus Barefoot Resort product that is golf-and-landing, not pier-and-sand. Do not let a pretty Barefoot listing substitute for an oceanfront brief.
HOA and flood diligence is the same job in both cities. Use the condo HOA and flood guide.
Golf, carts, and everyday retail
North Myrtle’s golf-cart culture is real on many streets. Barefoot adds golf campus living. Heather Glen and Little River sit just north if you want golf communities without a central Myrtle address.
Myrtle Beach’s golf story is Grande Dunes and a long list of courses you drive to. Everyday retail, medical, and shows are denser. That density is why some primary-home buyers stay in the city and why some want to sleep in Surfside or North Myrtle instead.
Price, without a slogan
True oceanfront is expensive in both places. The “North Myrtle is cheaper” line is sometimes true off the sand and often false on it. We compare peer properties. Second-row cottage to second-row cottage, mid-rise to mid-rise, not city averages.
Inland value still lives in Conway and Carolina Forest if the brief is square footage.
How we tour it
One orientation day can cover a central Myrtle balcony, Market Common, and an Ocean Drive cottage. A second day can add Cherry Grove and Barefoot if you are still split. We will not stack seven neighborhoods into one humid afternoon just to look thorough.
Call Lane at (717) 778-1554 or contact Sherman Beach Group. If you already own in one city and are curious about the other, start a home estimate.
The right answer is the week you will actually live. July Saturday or January Tuesday, not the name on the welcome packet.
A two-day comparison that actually decides it
Day one: a central Myrtle Beach oceanfront two-bedroom, a Market Common walk, and a west-of-Kings house if you need a garage. Day two: an Ocean Drive or Crescent cottage, a Cherry Grove condo or inlet walk, and Barefoot only if golf is on the brief. Eat dinner in the town you think you will live in. The restaurant mix tells you as much as the listing photos.
If you still cannot choose, you may be choosing use, not town. A lock-and-leave investor and a year-round couple should not share a short list. Split the file. See vacation rental homes or the relocating guide.
Schools, medical, and the unglamorous week
Primary-home buyers should ask about the actual drive to everyday medical and grocery, not only the drive to the sand. Both cities can work. The addresses that look close to everything on a tourist map can be the loudest in July. We walk them at the hour you would be home.
Golf-cart legal streets in North Myrtle are a genuine quality-of-life feature for some households and a non-issue for others. Do not buy a cart culture you will not use, and do not skip NMB because you think you need a high-rise to have a beach.
When we send you somewhere else
If you want a yard and a 20-minute beach, Carolina Forest may beat both cities. If you want marsh and docks, the south end wins. This comparison is only for people who are truly choosing the two big names. Honesty about that saves a wasted Saturday.
Condos versus cottages inside the same comparison
A Myrtle Beach tower and an NMB cottage are not a price-per-square-foot contest. They are a life contest. Run dues and insurance on the tower. Run flood and yard on the cottage. Then pick the week. The condo HOA guide and this article should be open at the same time if you are still using both city names.
How we write the comparison for a couple who disagrees
One person wants Ocean Drive carts. One person wants a quiet elevator and a restaurant list. We do not pick a winner in the first hour. We tour one honest version of each week, then we eat dinner in the town that felt like home at 6 p.m. Most couples decide that night. The ones who do not are usually choosing use. Live versus rent, and we split the file.
If you are that couple, send Lane both sentences. We will build a two-day trip that respects both, then we will tell you when the compromise address is actually a worse version of each. A mediocre Barefoot condo and a loud central tower is not a compromise. It is two misses.
